A-Z of Radiators

Radiator is one of the most important parts in a mechanical engine to keep it running efficiently. It is basically used to cool down the engine by transferring heat from the hot coolant that flows through it to the air blown through it by the fan. Internal combustion engines are often cooled by circulating a liquid called engine coolant through the engine block, where it is heated, then through a radiator where it loses heat to the atmosphere, and then returned to the engine. This engine coolant used to be water based but it can be oil as well.

A radiator, as the name suggests, generally radiates the heat from the fluid in the engine to the air outside, thereby cooling the liquid, which then flows back to the engine and thus cooling the engine as well. Since the airflow is mandatory, the radiator is placed in a vehicle where it gets sufficient airflow with the vehicle’s movement, i.e. in the front of the car, behind the front grills.

To keep the car running smoothly, radiators require regular maintenance ignoring which could result into engine blown and can cause damage to other parts as well. So, how can you know if the radiator needs repair? Well, here are some points which imply that radiator is demanding repair:

  • Restricted coolant action: Make sure that radiator is flowing the coolant to and fro the engine efficiently. If not so, then coolant will dry up soon due to faulty radiator and can cause serious problems to engine.
  • A radiator is made up of metal and since a liquid is constantly keeps on flowing through it, chances are there that it might catch some rust after sometime. So, keep a tab on this and keep checking your car’s radiator for rusting generally and also in rainy seasons, as it’s the water mainly that cause rusting from outside.
  • Coolant, with time, becomes sticky to the walls of radiator and keeps on exerting pressure on the walls, in small amount though. This, at a point of time in near future, could break the walls and coolant can start leaking from those breakage points. This can affect the cooling of the engine and thus engine will soon start heating at a faster rate.
